By: Linda E. Krueger, SCAHU President
SCAHU president was not a decision I accepted half-heartedly nor do I now take it lightly. When I was considering this role, I felt it was important to call a few SCAHU independent brokers for their opinion who are respected by their peers, and by their clients, to see if they thought I was suitable for the challenge ahead of me as their president. I will never forget what one of them told me “just because you are the captain of the ship does not mean you have to do, or be, everything on the ship”. Knowing the challenge came with a team of people who have the same goal and we could speak with one voice made me feel like I could be of service to you, the SCAHU membership.
On June 28, 2009, the NAHU 2009 Annual Convention began in New York. The excitement of being in New York and listening to dynamic motivational speakers Neal Peterson and his journey through a very complicated life, yet he made is goal to sail and become an award-winning author. Then, we listened to Johnny Bench who set his goal early on in life to play baseball, and as we all know, he met his goal. We attended leadership training workshops, regional meetings and attended the national awards breakfast where we applauded CSAHU taking the Landmark award. It was gratifying to see the names of SCAHU members Sharlene Yabe (recognized for receiving the Above and Beyond Award) and Rene Perreault (for receiving the White Knight Award) flash on the screen before us as did our triple crown recipients and LPRT’s. Keli Childs-Crisler is to be appreciated for the excellent presentation she sent to NAHU in a strong attempt to win the Pacesetter award. Nancy Dodder, Keli Childs-Crisler and I were so very proud to represent SCAHU as we, with the other delegates, swore in the new NAHU board and voted in the new national secretary. We said good-bye to our own Jamie Scholl as National Legislation Chairman and welcomed Carolynne Muldoon as National Membership Chairman and Heather Harte as National Co-Membership Chair. One of our own from Region VII, Eva Jean Fomalont, won the Gordon Memorial Award.
Then, convention ended and it was 1:00 on July 1, 2009 - I walked outside and looked up at the symbolic Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year's Eve Ball and thought Keli’s reign had ended—mine has begun. The year of “Educating America” on the value of the broker must continue. Americans appreciate their health care, their choices and their brokers who help them through the system. Here are a few thoughts for you.
- Our new NAHU president, Russ Childers, read many testimonies received from clients regarding the services brokers had performed for their clients. I encourage you to tell your stories – have your clients tell their stories. Remember, we can be proud to be part of an industry that cares about people. We are the navigators who meet with employer groups and individuals to help them determine which carrier and plan best fits their healthcare and benefit needs. We implement their plans, answer their questions, help them with claims and, yes, keep them informed on legislative issues. We are the consumer advocates.
- Janet Trautwein, NAHU, CEO spends countless hours on the Hill, testifying, receiving phone calls from our legislative representatives, speaking on our behalf. She cannot act alone. Stay informed and become involved. NAHU makes this process very easy for us. As a SCAHU member, you receive the most up-to-date information from NAHU that you must read and then act when requested. The only way our one voice can be heard is if we let our legislators know what we are thinking and then in turn become a resource for them. Read all communications you receive - Code Blue, NAHU Washington Updates – These updates will provide you with the most current information available. Read Code Reds and participate in Operation Shouts!
- Tell other brokers and carrier agents what NAHU, CSAHU and SCAHU are doing on their behalf and encourage them to join as members!
- Use the web-site tools available to you at www.nahu.org, www.csahu.org and www.socoahu.org
- Attend the local membership meetings as often as you can.
The following is your SCAHU board.
Past president/Awards Chair/PAC Chair - Keli Childs-Crisler. It was a privilege to work on Keli’s board last year. She took her presidency serious and proved to be a great leader. I applaud and thank her for bringing a level of excitement and industry awareness back into our SCAHU chapter. She spent hours on our awards to put SCAHU on the NAHU map. I am fortunate to follow Keli and yet know I have big shoes to fill.
President elect/Programs Chair – Andrea Baldrica. Andrea is extremely organized, well-connected and brought forth programs last year that were well received and attended by our membership. She also files for CE credits. We are fortunate to have her on board once again to work on programs and I know she will make a great president next year.
Vice President/Community Service Chair – JoAnn Vernon. JoAnn is our heart of SCAHU. She chose Community Service as her project. JoAnn encouraged the membership to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness, Shoes for Souls and was third in individual contributions at the state symposium for Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics and SCAHU did receive the award for the Chapter with the most contributions.
Secretary/Treasurer – Nancy Dodder. SCAHU has been fortunate to retain Nancy Dodder in this position. We appreciate her statistical and detailed expertise. Nancy keeps the board in check on both a task and financial basis.
Legislative Chair – Sharlene Yabe. Sharlene received the Above and Beyond Award. Sharlene spends tireless hours researching, reading, testifying and keeping us informed on legislation both local and national. Sharlene has a co-chair this year John Beerman.
Legislation is a huge focus for SCAHU and we are looking forward to this team keeping us updated.
Media Chair – Ryan Urban. Ryan has developed a media kit and is continually working on a speakers’ bureau to help educate the public. Given Ryan’s media background, we can look forward to getting SCAHU’s message out to the public.
Communications Chair – Rebecca Worrell. You can thank Rebecca for our programs’ announcements!! She is a valuable board member and keeps you informed on upcoming SCAHU events.
Hospitality Chair – Andy Orander. Andy works with the local facilities in the community for SCAHU membership meetings and is in charge of the food!
Membership Chair – Sonja Sanchez. Sonja Sanchez is new on the board this year and will work on actively recruiting new members into SCAHU. She will be joined by another new committee chair, Membership Retention Chair, Troy Westergren who will work on retention. Welcome both new chairs.
Thank you for the opportunity to be your SCAHU president. As Neal Peterson and Johnny Bench set their goals, I look forward to setting my goal for 2009-2010 to speak on behalf of the SCAHU broker because you care and support your clients – The American Consumers.
